Castle of Cortegana Spain

The centrepiece of the village is the Castle of Cortegana, also known as Castillo de Sancho IV. This medieval fortress dates back to the 13th century and played a significant role in the region’s history. Perched on a hill, the castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can explore its impressive walls, towers, and interior rooms, and imagine the lives of knights and royalty who once inhabited this majestic structure.

Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Piedad (Chapel of Our Lady of Piety)

Located near the castle, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Piedad is a charming chapel that holds religious and cultural importance for the villagers. It is the starting point of the Romeria de la Virgen de la Piedad. An annual pilgrimage celebrated with colourful processions and traditional dances.

Inside the outer castle wall and situated in the northeastern sector, is the Chapel of Our Lady of Piety. This consists of a single nave constructed of three segments separated by low transverse arches. Which, mounted on pilasters, support a half-barrel dome with lunettes. The back wall is crowned by an alcove with a square base a hemispherical dome and a lower dome for the porch at its foot.

The origin of the sanctuary should possibly be put at the XIII century. It is another example of the many repopulation chapels that were erected throughout the region after the Christian reconquest. We know that it was the first parish church in the town, as evidenced by Rodrigo Caro in 1634. It was originally consecrated to Our Lady of the Castle, according to Juan de Ledesma in 1633.

The altarpiece and the images in the church are mostly from the middle and second half of the XX century. Especially the Virgin of Piety, the patron saint of the area.

Sierra de Aracena and Picos de Aroche Natural Park

Iglesia del Divino Salvador (Parish Church of the Divine Saviour)

Located in the heart of Cortegana, the Parish Church of the Divine Saviour stands as a significant religious landmark in our region. Situated in the square bearing the same name, this church has undergone various construction phases since the early 14th century.

Initially, in the valley where the population settled, a Gothic Mudejar temple began to take shape, displaying architectural influences from Seville while incorporating local variations. The distinguished “Portada del Perdón” (Forgiveness Portico) served as the principal entrance, dating back to this era.

During the 16th century, the church underwent further transformations, resulting in an essentially Renaissance columned structure with a spacious interior featuring three naves and a polygonal presbytery that slightly protruded on the exterior. Architectural evidence suggests the design was crafted by Hernán Ruiz II.

In 1623, builders began constructing the façade and erected a tower at the corner of the gospel nave. The construction reached its completion in the late 18th century. The façade boasts a square base made of exposed brick, crowned with four rectangular bays on each side. At its peak, a spire adorned with a weather vane adds to its majestic charm.

Within the church’s walls, a treasure trove of valuable items adds to its grandeur, encompassing precious decorations and liturgical objects. The Parochial Treasure boasts exquisite silver and gold pieces. It is renowned as one of the most comprehensive collections in the province. Additionally, the collection of wrought objects from the 17th century. Comprising three pulpits and an altar rail, adds to the church’s artistic and historical significance.

Recognizing its cultural and historical importance, the Junta de Andalucía has designated the church in Cortegana as a Place of Cultural Interest.

Cortegana Spain Chapel of Jesus of Nazareth

The Chapel of Jesus of Nazareth is located at the exit from Cortegana on the Camino del Hurón, marking the completion of the town centre’s longitudinal axis, while also connecting various churches and chapels throughout the town.

Having undergone reconstruction in 1974, the chapel now boasts a modern appearance. Its restoration involved transforming the original cemetery chapel, which had been in use until the 1930s when a new cemetery was constructed.

Upon entering the chapel, visitors can admire an extraordinary carving of Our Lord Jesus of Nazareth. Blas Hernández Bello, from the Martínez Montañés school, crafted this remarkable sculpture in 1607. Carefully preserved, the sculpture retains its intricate details, especially in the form of the sculpture’s head and hands.
